"body": "\n## Statement\n\nLet $\\Omega_1, \\Omega_2 \\subset \\C^n$ be bounded [[strongly pseudoconvex domains|Z7RVXBA2KB]] with $C^\\infty$ boundaries.\nLet $F \\colon \\Omega_1 \\to \\Omega_2$ be a [[biholomorphism|FX92PP3HZR]].\nThen $F$ extends to a $C^\\infty$ [[diffeomorphism|0KZZ70ZHXP]] from $\\overline{\\Omega_1}$ onto $\\overline{\\Omega_2}$.\n\n## Remarks\n\nFefferman's proof studies the geodesics of the [[Bergman metric|BB7S4NTZ6V]], which a biholomorphism maps to geodesics, and uses [[his expansion of the Bergman kernel|GPQ9JNSDPA]] to control them near the boundary.\nLater, Bell and Ligocka gave a shorter proof based on the regularity of the [[Bergman projection|6J1X63Z7QZ]] up to the boundary.\n\nConsequence: the restriction of $F$ to $\\partial\\Omega_1$ is a smooth diffeomorphism onto $\\partial\\Omega_2$ that preserves the CR structures of the boundaries.\nSo every invariant of the CR structure of the boundary, such as those of the [[Chern–Moser normal form|FHG1N4EKP4]], is a biholomorphic invariant of the domain.\nA generic small perturbation of the sphere has a CR structure that is not locally equivalent to that of the sphere.\nSo a generic smooth strongly pseudoconvex domain near the ball is not biholomorphic to the ball.\n\nIn one variable the analogous fact is classical: a conformal map between two bounded domains with $C^\\infty$ boundary extends smoothly to the closures.\n\n## Explanations\n\n### L1 human\n\nTwo domains can be the same for complex analysis, through a biholomorphic map, while their boundaries look different.\nFefferman's theorem says that for smooth strongly pseudoconvex domains this cannot happen: the map between the domains also matches their boundaries smoothly.\nSo the shape of the boundary becomes a tool to tell such domains apart.\n\n### L2 human\n\nIn several variables, the Riemann mapping theorem fails: by [[Poincaré's theorem|1NF8T07H9X]] the ball and the polydisc are not biholomorphic, and most domains are not biholomorphic to the ball.\nFefferman's theorem turns the classification of strongly pseudoconvex domains up to biholomorphism into the classification of their boundaries up to CR diffeomorphism.\nThe proof via the Bergman projection shows the role of boundary regularity of canonical operators, a theme that extends to many weakly pseudoconvex domains.\n",
