## Summary

Statistical inference is the process of drawing conclusions about an unknown probability distribution from data generated by it.
It works inside a [[statistical model|K3AMMSY8DD]] and produces estimates, confidence sets, tests or predictions.
The two main schools are [[frequentist inference|YDSNHKM3EG]] and [[Bayesian inference|0JWRJX2RMP]].

## Explanations

### L1 human

You see a sample and want to say something about the whole population or process behind it.
Statistical inference turns the sample into a statement, such as "the average height is about $172$ cm, give or take $2$ cm".
It also says how much trust such a statement deserves.
For example, from $1000$ voters in a poll you infer the share of a party among all voters.
