Cole–Hopf transformation

Summary

The Cole–Hopf transformation turns the viscous Burgers' equation into the linear heat equation. It sets u=−2ν ∂xlog⁡φu = -2\nu\, \partial_x \log \varphi, where φ\varphi is a positive solution of the heat equation. It gives an explicit formula for the solution of the initial value problem for Burgers' equation. Letting the viscosity tend to zero in that formula recovers the entropy solution of the inviscid equation. See the definition.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
