d'Alembert's functional equation

Summary

d'Alembert's functional equation is the functional equation f(x+y)+f(x−y)=2f(x)f(y)f(x + y) + f(x - y) = 2 f(x) f(y) for an unknown function f ⁣:ℝ→ℝf \colon \R \to \R. It is the addition rule of the cosine, written as an equation. Its continuous solutions are f=0f = 0, f(x)=cos⁡(ax)f(x) = \cos(ax) and f(x)=cosh⁡(ax)f(x) = \cosh(ax) with a∈ℝa \in \R. Versions on groups, with x−yx - y replaced by xy−1x y^{-1}, are a main topic of the theory of functional equations on groups.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
