Double counting

Summary

Double counting is a proof technique in combinatorics. To prove that two expressions are equal, one shows that both count the elements of the same finite set. Each expression comes from a different way to count that set.

A common form uses a relation R⊆A×BR \subseteq A \times B between finite sets AA and BB. For a∈Aa \in A, let d(a)d(a) be the number of b∈Bb \in B with (a,b)∈R(a, b) \in R. For b∈Bb \in B, let e(b)e(b) be the number of a∈Aa \in A with (a,b)∈R(a, b) \in R. Then both sums count the pairs in RR, so ∑a∈Ad(a)=∣R∣=∑b∈Be(b).\sum_{a \in A} d(a) = |R| = \sum_{b \in B} e(b).

Remarks

The handshaking lemma is double counting applied to the pairs of a vertex and an edge that contains it. The symmetry of binomial coefficients has a short proof by this technique.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
