Local solvability

Summary

A linear differential operator PP is locally solvable at a point if Pu=fP u = f has a solution near that point for every smooth ff. Operators with constant coefficients are always locally solvable, but Hans Lewy found a first-order operator with polynomial coefficients that is locally solvable at no point. This discovery started the study of necessary and sufficient conditions for local solvability. See the definition.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
