LU decomposition

Summary

An LU decomposition of a square matrix AA is a factorization A=LUA = LU. Here LL is a lower triangular matrix and UU is an upper triangular matrix. Gaussian elimination without row exchanges produces such a factorization: UU is the row echelon form, and LL stores the multipliers of the row operations. With row exchanges, one gets PA=LUPA = LU for a permutation matrix PP, and each square matrix over a field has such a factorization.

Remarks

An invertible matrix has an LU decomposition with LL unit lower triangular if and only if all its leading principal minors are nonzero. This decomposition is then unique. The matrix (0110)\begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix} has no LU decomposition, but it has one after a row exchange. To solve Ax=bAx = b, solve Ly=bLy = b by forward substitution and Ux=yUx = y by back substitution. The decomposition also gives det⁡A=det⁡Ldet⁡U\det A = \det L \det U.

  • edge defines in: at least one definition (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of in: at least two examples (0 of 2)
  • edge not_instance_of in: at least one non-example (0 of 1)
  • edge specializes both: the more general notions and the special cases (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
