Percus–Yevick approximation
Example
Consider a classical fluid in with number density , inverse temperature and a pair potential . Let be the radial distribution function, , and let be the direct correlation function of the Ornstein–Zernike equation. The Percus–Yevick approximation is the closure With the cavity function and the Mayer function it reads . Inserted in the Ornstein–Zernike equation it gives where ; this is a nonlinear integral equation for , quadratic in .
Check of the second form: .
Remarks
For hard spheres of diameter , for and the closure gives for . In this case the equation has a known closed-form solution, in which is a cubic polynomial in for . With the packing fraction , the compressibility route gives the equation of state , and the virial route gives . The two routes differ because the closure is an approximation.
