Pseudorandom number generator
Definition
A pseudorandom number generator is a tuple where:
- is a finite set, the state space;
- is the initial state, or seed;
- is a map, the transition function;
- is a set, the output space, usually or a set of integers ;
- is a map, the output function.
The generator produces the states for and the output sequence for .
Remarks
Example: , , , and ; all five clauses hold, and the outputs are , then repeat. Non-example: the sequence of decimal digits of is not eventually periodic, because is irrational. It is not the output sequence of any such tuple, since a finite state space as in clause 1 forces the outputs to be eventually periodic. Since is finite, the sequence is eventually periodic, with period at most ; if is a bijection it is purely periodic. The definition is purely structural; the quality of a generator is judged by its period, by the uniformity of tuples , and by statistical tests. Generators for cryptography must in addition be unpredictable from past outputs, which is a stronger requirement.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
