Rational approximation

Summary

Rational approximation is the approximation of functions by rational functions p/qp/q with prescribed bounds on the degrees of pp and qq. Rational functions can imitate poles, steep fronts, and singular points much better than polynomials of the same number of parameters. A striking case is Newman's theorem: ∣x∣\abs{x} on [−1,1][-1, 1] has rational approximation error of order e−cne^{-c\sqrt{n}}, while polynomials only achieve order 1/n1/n. Padé approximants and best uniform rational approximations are the main constructions.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
