Ricker model

Example

Let r>0r > 0 and K>0K > 0 be constants. The Ricker model is the nonlinear difference equation Nt+1=f(Nt),f(N)=N er(1−N/K),N_{t+1} = f(N_t), \qquad f(N) = N\, e^{r (1 - N/K)}, for a population size Nt≥0N_t \ge 0. Its equilibria are the solutions of f(N)=Nf(N) = N, namely N=0N = 0 and N=KN = K. The derivative is f′(N)=er(1−N/K)(1−rN/K)f'(N) = e^{r(1 - N/K)} (1 - r N / K), so f′(0)=er>1f'(0) = e^r > 1 and f′(K)=1−rf'(K) = 1 - r. Hence the equilibrium 00 is unstable, and the equilibrium KK is asymptotically stable when ∣1−r∣<1\abs{1 - r} < 1, that is, when 0<r<20 < r < 2. At r=2r = 2 one has f′(K)=−1f'(K) = -1, and as rr increases past 22 the solutions go through a period-doubling cascade towards chaotic behaviour.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
