Saddle point of a Lagrangian
Definition
Let be a set, and let be functions. Consider the problem of minimizing over subject to for . Its Lagrangian is the function given by A pair is a saddle point of the Lagrangian if
Remarks
The function is minimal in the first variable and maximal in the second at , as for a saddle point of any function on a product. The numbers play the role of Lagrange multipliers. If is a saddle point, the left inequality forces for all and for all . The right inequality then gives for every feasible , so is optimal. This needs no convexity; the converse needs convexity of , and and a constraint qualification such as Slater's condition.
Example: minimize over subject to , with . The pair is a saddle point. For every , . For every , .
Non-example: the pair for the same problem. The right inequality fails, since .
