Shift operator

Summary

A shift operator moves the argument of a function or the index of a sequence by a fixed amount. On functions of a real variable it sends ff to x↦f(x+h)x \mapsto f(x + h); on sequences it sends (un)(u_n) to (un+1)(u_{n+1}). It is the building block of the operator calculus of finite differences, since the forward difference is the shift minus the identity. In functional analysis the shift on sequence spaces is a basic example of a linear operator.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
