Variance reduction

Summary

Variance reduction is the family of techniques that make a Monte Carlo method more accurate for the same computing effort. The error of a plain Monte Carlo estimate with nn samples is about σ/n\sigma/\sqrt{n}, where σ2\sigma^2 is the variance of one sample. The rate n−1/2n^{-1/2} is fixed for plain random sampling. So the gains come from replacing the sampled quantity by another with the same mean and a smaller variance. Halving σ\sigma saves a factor of four in the number of samples.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
