Volterra equations with completely monotone kernels

Summary

These are Volterra equations of convolution type whose kernel kk is completely monotone on (0,∞)(0, \infty): it is infinitely differentiable and its derivatives alternate in sign. By Bernstein's theorem on monotone functions, such a kernel is a superposition k(t)=∫e−st dμ(s)k(t) = \int e^{-st} \, d\mu(s) of decaying exponentials with a positive measure μ\mu. The class contains the exponential kernels and the Abel kernels tα−1t^{\alpha - 1} with 0<α<10 < \alpha < 1. It is a natural setting for positivity and decay results for solutions. Such kernels model fading memory, for instance in linear viscoelasticity.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
