Definition
Let be a scheme. An abelian scheme over is a group scheme such that:
Remarks
For each point , the fibre is an abelian variety over the residue field . An abelian scheme over , for a field , is the same as an abelian variety over . The group law of an abelian scheme is commutative.
Example: let and let be the closure of , with unit section the point at infinity. The discriminant of this Weierstrass equation is , a unit on . So every fibre is a smooth curve of genus , and is an abelian scheme of relative dimension .
Non-example: the same equation over fails clause 1. Modulo , the curve is singular at the point , where both partial derivatives and vanish.
