Absolutely free algebra
Definition
Let be a signature of function symbols and let be a set. An absolutely free algebra of signature on is an algebra of signature with a map such that:
- is generated by .
- For every algebra of signature and every map , there is a homomorphism with .
Remarks
This is a free algebra in the variety of all algebras of signature , the variety defined by the empty set of identities. The term algebra , whose elements are terms over , is an absolutely free algebra on . Every absolutely free algebra on is isomorphic to it. Let be generated by . Then is absolutely free on exactly when and each basic operation are injective, and the images of different operations are disjoint and do not meet . Example: for one unary symbol and , the algebra with and is absolutely free; the extension of sends to . Non-example: with and is not absolutely free on , since it is not generated by .
