Definition
Let be a complex Banach space and let be a closed linear operator. Let be a scalar locally integrable kernel on , let , , and let . The abstract Volterra equation with kernel , operator and forcing is A strong solution is a function such that for all , , and the equation holds for all .
Remarks
A mild solution is a function such that for all and . Every strong solution is a mild solution, since is closed; compare the mild solution of an abstract Cauchy problem.
Special cases. For , a strong solution with satisfies and . For , differentiating twice gives with and , when .
Example: , , and . The function is a strong solution, since .
Non-example: in the same setting, is not a solution, since .
