Definition
Let be a separably closed field and let be an algebraic variety over . Let be a prime number different from the characteristic of . For , the -adic cohomology groups of are Here is étale cohomology. The inverse limit is taken along the maps induced by the reductions . is the ring of -adic integers, and is the field of -adic numbers.
Remarks
Example: let be algebraically closed and . Then , and , compatibly in . So is for and otherwise, as for the sphere . Non-example: the condition is needed. Let have characteristic and let be an elliptic curve over . Then has dimension if is ordinary and if is supersingular, not the expected dimension . For proper over , the groups are finite-dimensional and vanish for .
