Affine arithmetic
Builds on Interval arithmeticInterval
Definition
An affine form is an expression with real coefficients and noise symbols . The noise symbols stand for unknown reals in , shared by all affine forms of a computation. Its range is the interval with radius . Affine arithmetic computes with affine forms by the following rules.
- Affine operations are exact: and for reals .
- A nonlinear operation is replaced by an affine form with a new noise symbol . It is chosen so that for all values of in .
- For multiplication one may take , where are the radii of .
Remarks
Example: represents , and by rule 1, while interval arithmetic gives . Example: by rule 3, with range , which contains the true range of . Non-example: replacing by its tangent alone, without a new noise term, violates rule 2: at it gives , but . In a computer the coefficients are rounded outward, and the rounding errors are also absorbed into a new noise term.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
