Affine independence
Definition
Let be a field, let be a vector space over , and let be an affine space over . Let be points of . They are affinely independent if the vectors of are linearly independent.
Remarks
Example: in , the points , , are affinely independent, since the vectors and are linearly independent. Non-example: the points , , are not, since . The condition does not depend on which point plays the role of . An equivalent form: for all with and , all are . Another equivalent form: no is an affine combination of the other points. In an affine space of dimension , at most points can be affinely independent.
