Definition

Let AA be a commutative ring with identity, and let X=Spec⁑AX = \operatorname{Spec} A be its spectrum with the Zariski topology. For f∈Af \in A, write D(f)={π”βˆˆX:fβˆ‰π”}D(f) = \set{\mathfrak{p} \in X : f \notin \mathfrak{p}}; these sets form a basis of open sets of XX. Let AfA_f be the localization of AA at the powers of ff. The structure sheaf π’ͺX\mathcal{O}_X is the unique sheaf of rings on XX with π’ͺX(D(f))=Af\mathcal{O}_X(D(f)) = A_f for every f∈Af \in A. Its restriction maps Afβ†’AgA_f \to A_g for D(g)βŠ†D(f)D(g) \subseteq D(f) are the natural maps. Its stalk at 𝔭\mathfrak{p} is the localization at the prime ideal A𝔭A_{\mathfrak p}, which is a local ring.

An affine scheme is a locally ringed space isomorphic to (Spec⁑A,π’ͺSpec⁑A)(\operatorname{Spec} A, \mathcal{O}_{\operatorname{Spec} A}) for some commutative ring AA.

Remarks

Example: Spec⁑℀\operatorname{Spec} \Z is an affine scheme; its points are (0)(0) and (p)(p) for the primes pp, and π’ͺ(D(n))=β„€[1/n]\mathcal{O}(D(n)) = \Z[1/n] for nβ‰ 0n \ne 0. Example: the affine nn-space over a ring RR is 𝔸Rn=Spec⁑R[x1,…,xn]\mathbb{A}^n_R = \operatorname{Spec} R[x_1, \ldots, x_n]. Non-example: for a field kk, the open subset U=𝔸k2βˆ–{(x,y)}U = \mathbb{A}^2_k \setminus \set{(x, y)} of the plane, with the restricted sheaf, is a locally ringed space but not an affine scheme. Its ring of global functions is k[x,y]k[x, y], so if it were affine it would be Spec⁑k[x,y]\operatorname{Spec} k[x, y], which also contains the origin (x,y)(x, y). The ring is recovered as Aβ‰…π’ͺX(X)A \cong \mathcal{O}_X(X), the global sections.
