Definition
Let be an algebraically closed field and let . Give the Zariski topology, whose closed sets are the algebraic sets. An affine variety in is an algebraic set that is irreducible. This means that is nonempty and that is not the union of two algebraic sets strictly smaller than .
Remarks
An algebraic set is irreducible if and only if its ideal is a prime ideal. For instance, if is irreducible and , then , and irreducibility forces or . With Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, affine varieties in correspond to prime ideals of .
Example: the parabola is an affine variety. Its ideal is , and is an integral domain, so the ideal is prime.
Non-example: is an algebraic set but not an affine variety. It is the union of the two axes, each strictly smaller than .
Many texts, especially those based on schemes, call any algebraic set an affine variety, or use the term for a variety isomorphic to a closed subvariety of some .
