Definition
Let be a symmetric monoidal category, such as sets or topological spaces with the cartesian product. An operad in consists of objects for and the following data. There is a right action of the symmetric group on each , and a unit . There are composition maps, which are associative, unital and equivariant: An algebra over , or -algebra, is an object of with maps These maps must satisfy three conditions, written here with elements as for sets or spaces:
- (associativity) , where and is a -tuple of elements of ;
- (unit) , where ;
- (equivariance) for .
In a general the three clauses are the commutativity of the corresponding diagrams.
Remarks
Equivalently, an -algebra structure on is a morphism of operads , where is the internal hom from to , when is closed.
Example: the commutative operad in sets has for every . An algebra is a set with one map for each . Equivariance makes , the associativity clause makes associative, and picks a unit. So the algebras are exactly the commutative monoids. Likewise the associative operad, with , has the monoids as its algebras.
Non-example: take and try to make it an algebra over the commutative operad with . Equivariance fails for the transposition, since .
