Definition
Let be the probability simplex of distributions on outcomes. An algebraic statistical model is a statistical model of one of the following forms:
- the image of an open parameter set under a polynomial or rational map , or
- the set for a set of polynomials in the polynomial ring .
Algebraic statistics is the study of statistical models and methods through the ideals of polynomials vanishing on such models and the algebraic varieties they define.
Remarks
Example: the independence model for two binary variables is the image of under . It equals the set of with all and . One inclusion: . Conversely, such a is with and , since , and similarly for the other coordinates.
Non-example: the Poisson family , , is not an algebraic statistical model in this sense. It lives on infinitely many outcomes, so it is not a subset of a simplex , and its coordinates are not polynomial or rational in .
