Abstract harmonic analysis Definition
Almost periodic function
Definition
Let be an abelian topological group, written additively. Let be the space of bounded continuous functions with the norm . For and , let be the translate of by . A function is almost periodic if the set of its translates is relatively compact in . This means that its closure in the norm is compact.
Remarks
Equivalently, every sequence of translates has a subsequence that converges uniformly on . This is Bochner's form of the definition. For it is equivalent to Bohr's definition through relatively dense sets of almost periods, see Bohr almost periodic function. For a locally compact abelian group , the almost periodic functions are exactly the functions , where is the Bohr compactification and is continuous on .
Example: on , let . The translates of are , the image of the circle under a continuous map into , so they form a compact set. The same holds for , and the translates of lie in the sum of these two compact sets, which is compact. So is almost periodic.
Non-example: on is bounded and continuous, but not almost periodic. The translates , , converge pointwise to the constant . A uniformly convergent subsequence would have the same limit, but for every .
