Almost periodic sequence
Builds on SequencePeriodic sequence
Definition
Let be a two-sided sequence of complex numbers. For , an integer is an -almost period of the sequence if The sequence is almost periodic if the following holds for every . There is an integer such that every set of consecutive integers contains an -almost period.
Remarks
Example: a periodic sequence with period is almost periodic. Every multiple of is an -almost period for every , and every set of consecutive integers contains a multiple of , so works.
Non-example: let for and for . For take , and for take : in both cases . So for the only almost period is , and no works.
Equivalent forms: a bounded sequence is almost periodic if and only if the set of its translates , , is relatively compact for the supremum norm. It is also equivalent that the sequence is a uniform limit on of trigonometric polynomials with and . An almost periodic sequence is bounded.
