Altitude of a triangle
Builds on TriangleLineVector projectionDistance from a point to a line
Definition
Let be a triangle in the Euclidean space , and let be the dot product. Let be the orthogonal projection of onto the line : The altitude of from is the segment from to . The point is the foot of the altitude, and is its length. The altitudes from and from are defined in the same way.
Remarks
The formula uses the vector projection of onto . The length is the distance from to the line .
The word altitude also names the whole line through and , or the length . Mathlib's Affine.Simplex.altitude is the line.
With , the area of the triangle is .
Let the right angle of a right triangle be at . Then the leg is the altitude from , and the leg is the altitude from .
