Definition

Let 𝒱\mathcal{V} be a variety of algebras and let AA be an algebra in 𝒱\mathcal{V}. Let (Bi)i∈I(B_i)_{i \in I} be a family of algebras in 𝒱\mathcal{V} with homomorphisms Ξ±i ⁣:Aβ†’Bi\alpha_i \colon A \to B_i. Call a family of homomorphisms gi ⁣:Biβ†’Dg_i \colon B_i \to D compatible if gi∘αi=gj∘αjg_i \circ \alpha_i = g_j \circ \alpha_j for all i,j∈Ii, j \in I. An amalgamated free product of the BiB_i over AA is an algebra CC in 𝒱\mathcal{V} with homomorphisms Ξ²i ⁣:Biβ†’C\beta_i \colon B_i \to C such that:

  1. the family (βi)i∈I(\beta_i)_{i \in I} is compatible;
  2. for every algebra DD in 𝒱\mathcal{V} and every compatible family gi ⁣:Biβ†’Dg_i \colon B_i \to D, there is a unique homomorphism g ⁣:Cβ†’Dg \colon C \to D with g∘βi=gig \circ \beta_i = g_i for all ii.

It is written βˆ—ABi\mathop{\ast}_A B_i, or B1βˆ—AB2B_1 *_A B_2 for two factors.

Remarks

The amalgamated free product exists in every variety and is unique up to a unique compatible isomorphism. It is the quotient of the free product of the BiB_i by the smallest congruence that identifies the images of αi(a)\alpha_i(a) and αj(a)\alpha_j(a) for all a∈Aa \in A and i,j∈Ii, j \in I. With AA the trivial group in the variety of groups, it is the free product. Usually the αi\alpha_i are embeddings; whether the βi\beta_i are then embeddings depends on the variety, and for groups they always are.

Example: in the variety of groups, β„€/4β„€βˆ—β„€/2β„€β„€/6β„€\Z/4\Z *_{\Z/2\Z} \Z/6\Z, with β„€/2β„€\Z/2\Z mapped to the subgroups of order 22, is isomorphic to SL2(β„€)SL_2(\Z).

Non-example: in groups, the direct product β„€Γ—β„€\Z \times \Z with the two coordinate inclusions is not β„€βˆ—{0}β„€\Z *_{\set{0}} \Z. Clause 2 fails for D=S3D = S_3 and g1,g2g_1, g_2 sending 11 to two non-commuting transpositions, since the generators of β„€Γ—β„€\Z \times \Z commute.

In Mathlib the construction for monoids and groups is Monoid.PushoutI.
