Definition
A function element in is a pair where is a nonempty connected open set and is a holomorphic function on .
- A function element is a direct analytic continuation of if is nonempty and on some connected component of .
- A function element is an analytic continuation of along a chain if a finite sequence of function elements runs from to . Each must be a direct analytic continuation of .
If and on , one says that is an analytic continuation of to .
Remarks
By the identity theorem, if and agree on a nonempty open subset of a component of , they agree on that whole component.
Example: let and with the principal branch. Moving through half-spaces in the -direction around the plane gives a chain of direct continuations that returns to with the function . So continuation along a closed chain need not give back the original function element.
Non-example: if is empty, then is never a direct analytic continuation of , whatever is.
For this is the usual analytic continuation of a holomorphic function along a chain of discs or domains.
