Analytic signal
Definition
Let be real-valued, an element of the space. Let be its Hilbert transform. The analytic signal of is the complex-valued function
Remarks
With the Fourier transform , one has , so which is for and for . Since is real, , and is determined by . One writes with the instantaneous amplitude and the instantaneous phase.
Example: . Its Hilbert transform is , so . The function is holomorphic on the upper half-plane, as the definition predicts.
Non-example: the clause "real-valued" matters. For the complex function one has , so , and the real part of is , not .
