Angle of parallelism
Builds on Hyperbolic geometryAngle at a pointBeltrami–Klein model
Definition
Let be the hyperbolic plane of constant curvature . Let be a line and a point not on . Let be the foot of the perpendicular from to , and let . A ray from meets when its angle with the ray is small. Fix a side of the line , and for let be the ray from on that side at angle with . The angle of parallelism is the supremum of the angles such that meets . The ray at angle exactly does not meet ; it is a limiting parallel to through .
Remarks
The value does not depend on the side of , nor on and , only on , and Lobachevsky's formula gives Example: in the Beltrami–Klein model, take the centre and the chord with . Lines through the centre are diameters, so the foot is and . The limiting parallels are the chords from to the endpoints , which make angle with at the centre; angles at the centre are Euclidean in this model. So , as the formula says. Non-example: in the Euclidean plane every ray from at angle less than with meets , and the ray at angle is the unique parallel. There the supremum is for every , so the angle carries no information about distance. In curvature , the formula holds with replaced by .
