Definition
Let be a normed vector space of functions, and let be nonempty subsets of , the approximating classes. Approximation theory is the study of the following questions for .
- Existence: does have a best approximation from ?
- Uniqueness and characterization: is it unique, and which conditions single it out?
- Rates: how fast does the error of best approximation tend to as , and how does this rate depend on ?
- Construction: which explicit methods give good approximations of from ?
Remarks
Example: with the supremum norm and the polynomials of degree at most . Here a best approximation exists and is unique, it is characterized by the equioscillation theorem, and for every by the Weierstrass approximation theorem.
Non-example: a single numerical estimate, such as on , is an approximation result but does not by itself pose these questions. The theory studies whole families and all in a class.
Other common choices are trigonometric polynomials, splines with knots, rational functions of degree , and norms instead of the supremum norm.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
