Definition
Let be a field, let , and let be a morphism of projective space defined over . For such a morphism is given by a rational function . Write for the -fold composition of with itself and . For a point :
- the forward orbit of is ;
- is periodic if for some ;
- is preperiodic if is periodic for some , equivalently if is finite.
Arithmetic dynamics is the study of these orbits when is a field of arithmetic interest. Examples of such fields are an algebraic number field, a -adic field or a finite field.
Remarks
The set of preperiodic points of in is written .
Example: let and . Then , so and are periodic of period . Also , so is preperiodic but not periodic, since for all .
Non-example: for the same , the point is not preperiodic. Its orbit is , and for , so the orbit is strictly increasing and infinite.
When is a number field and has degree at least , Northcott's theorem on heights implies that is finite.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
