Definition
Let be a set and let be a map. Assume that, for every , the set of fixed points of the -th iterate is finite. Write . The Artin–Mazur zeta function of is the formal power series It has rational coefficients.
Remarks
Example: let on the unit circle in . The fixed points of are the solutions of with , that is, the -th roots of unity, so . Then
Non-example: the identity map of the circle has infinitely many fixed points, so is not finite and the definition does not apply.
If for constants and , the series has a positive radius of convergence and is a holomorphic function near . For the shift on a subshift of finite type with transition matrix , and . For an Axiom A diffeomorphism of a compact manifold, the zeta function is rational (Manning). The function has the product form , a product over the periodic orbits of with the number of points of .
