Askey–Wilson polynomials
Definition
Let with , and let with . Write with the q-Pochhammer symbol. For an integer and , the Askey–Wilson polynomial of degree is where is the terminating basic hypergeometric series.
Remarks
Since , each term is a polynomial in , and is a polynomial of degree at most with leading coefficient . The factor cancels the denominators, and is symmetric in .
Example: . The has two terms, and since ,
Orthogonality: if and are real with absolute values less than , then for
Non-example: for parameters as in the orthogonality statement, is not , since is orthogonal to the constant for the positive weight , while .
