Example

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let QQ be a convex polygon with n+3n + 3 vertices. A diagonal of QQ joins two non-adjacent vertices. The associahedron KK of dimension nn is a convex polytope whose face lattice is described as follows.

  1. The nonempty faces of KK correspond to the sets of pairwise non-crossing diagonals of QQ, ordered by reverse inclusion. A kk-face corresponds to n−kn - k diagonals.
  2. The vertices correspond to the triangulations of QQ, the maximal sets of nn non-crossing diagonals.
  3. The facets correspond to the single diagonals of QQ.
  4. Two vertices are joined by an edge when the triangulations differ by a flip. A flip removes one diagonal and inserts the other diagonal of the quadrilateral that appears.

Each triangulation has nn diagonals and each can be flipped, so every vertex lies in exactly nn edges, and KK is a simple polytope. The number of vertices is the Catalan number Cn+1C_{n+1}, the number of triangulations of an (n+3)(n+3)-gon.

Remarks

For n=2n = 2, QQ is a pentagon with 55 triangulations and 55 diagonals, and KK is a pentagon. For n=3n = 3, QQ is a hexagon with 1414 triangulations and 99 diagonals, and KK is a three-dimensional polytope with 1414 vertices and 99 facets (33 squares and 66 pentagons). The same lattice also describes the ways to put brackets in a product of n+2n + 2 factors, which is where the name comes from. Several explicit realizations by coordinates are known.
