Associated Legendre polynomials

Builds on Legendre polynomials

Definition

Let ℓ\ell and mm be integers with 0≤m≤ℓ0 \le m \le \ell, and let PℓP_\ell be the Legendre polynomial of degree ℓ\ell. The associated Legendre polynomial PℓmP_\ell^m is the function on [−1,1][-1, 1] given by Pℓm(x)=(−1)m(1−x2)m/2dmdxmPℓ(x).P_\ell^m(x) = (-1)^m (1 - x^2)^{m/2} \frac{d^m}{dx^m} P_\ell(x). For 0<m≤ℓ0 < m \le \ell one also sets Pℓ−m(x)=(−1)m(ℓ−m)!(ℓ+m)!Pℓm(x).P_\ell^{-m}(x) = (-1)^m \frac{(\ell - m)!}{(\ell + m)!} P_\ell^m(x).

Remarks

The factor (−1)m(-1)^m is the Condon–Shortley phase; some authors leave it out. Examples: Pℓ0=PℓP_\ell^0 = P_\ell, P11(x)=−(1−x2)1/2P_1^1(x) = -(1 - x^2)^{1/2}, P21(x)=−3x(1−x2)1/2P_2^1(x) = -3x (1 - x^2)^{1/2} and P22(x)=3(1−x2)P_2^2(x) = 3(1 - x^2). Check for P22P_2^2: P2(x)=(3x2−1)/2P_2(x) = (3x^2 - 1)/2 has second derivative 33, so P22(x)=(1−x2)⋅3P_2^2(x) = (1 - x^2) \cdot 3. Each PℓmP_\ell^m solves the associated Legendre equation (1−x2)y′′−2xy′+(ℓ(ℓ+1)−m21−x2)y=0(1 - x^2) y'' - 2x y' + \left( \ell(\ell + 1) - \frac{m^2}{1 - x^2} \right) y = 0 on (−1,1)(-1, 1). For fixed mm they are orthogonal: ∫−11Pkm(x)Pℓm(x) dx=2(ℓ+m)!(2ℓ+1)(ℓ−m)!δkℓ\int_{-1}^{1} P_k^m(x) P_\ell^m(x) \, dx = \frac{2 (\ell + m)!}{(2\ell + 1)(\ell - m)!} \delta_{k\ell}. Non-example: the case m>ℓm > \ell is excluded, because then the mm-th derivative of PℓP_\ell is zero and the formula gives only the zero function.
