Associativity equation
Builds on Functional equationBinary operation
Definition
Let be a set. The associativity equation on is the functional equation for an unknown binary operation . A solution is an associative operation on .
Remarks
Example: on is a solution, since both sides equal . Non-example: on is not a solution, since while . Every operation , with injective and closed under addition, is a solution. On a real interval, the continuous solutions that are strictly increasing in each variable are all of this form, with continuous and strictly monotone.
