Definition

Let BB be the backshift operator, BXt=Xt−1B X_t = X_{t-1}, and let ∇=1−B\nabla = 1 - B be the difference operator, so ∇Xt=Xt−Xt−1\nabla X_t = X_t - X_{t-1}. Let p,d,q≥0p, d, q \ge 0 be integers. A time series (Xt)(X_t) is an ARIMA(pp, dd, qq) process if the differenced series Yt=∇dXtY_t = \nabla^d X_t is a causal ARMA(pp, qq) process. Equivalently, ϕ(B)(1−B)dXt=c+θ(B)εt\phi(B) (1 - B)^d X_t = c + \theta(B) \varepsilon_t for a white noise (εt)(\varepsilon_t), a constant cc, and polynomials ϕ\phi of degree pp and θ\theta of degree qq. Here ϕ(0)=θ(0)=1\phi(0) = \theta(0) = 1, and ϕ\phi has no root in the closed unit disk.

Remarks

For d=0d = 0 this is a causal ARMA(pp, qq) process. For d≥1d \ge 1 the process is not stationary in general. It is determined by YY only up to dd starting values, since ∇d\nabla^d kills polynomials in tt of degree less than dd. A series whose dd-th difference is stationary but whose (d−1)(d-1)-th difference is not is called integrated of order dd, written I(dd).

Example: the random walk Xt=Xt−1+εtX_t = X_{t-1} + \varepsilon_t is ARIMA(00, 11, 00), because ∇Xt=εt\nabla X_t = \varepsilon_t is a white noise, which is ARMA(00, 00). The model Xt=Xt−1+0.5(Xt−1−Xt−2)+εtX_t = X_{t-1} + 0.5 (X_{t-1} - X_{t-2}) + \varepsilon_t is ARIMA(11, 11, 00), since ∇Xt=0.5∇Xt−1+εt\nabla X_t = 0.5 \nabla X_{t-1} + \varepsilon_t.

Non-example: the explosive series with X0=0X_0 = 0 and Xt=1.5Xt−1+εtX_t = 1.5 X_{t-1} + \varepsilon_t for t≥1t \ge 1 is not ARIMA for any dd. Its autoregressive polynomial 1−1.5z1 - 1.5 z has the root 2/32/3 inside the unit disk, so the variance of XtX_t grows geometrically. Differencing does not remove this explosive root, because ∇d\nabla^d only contributes the root 11, so ∇dXt\nabla^d X_t is never stationary.

Seasonal ARIMA models also apply seasonal differences 1−Bs1 - B^s for a period ss, such as s=12s = 12 for monthly data.
