Definition
A white noise with variance is a sequence of real random variables with , and for . Let , let with , and let be a white noise. An autoregressive model of order , or AR(), is a weakly stationary process that satisfies Its autoregressive polynomial is .
Remarks
If for all complex with , the equation has exactly one weakly stationary solution. If moreover has no root in the closed unit disk , this solution is causal: with and . Many texts include causality in the definition.
Example: for , and , the process converges in mean square and satisfies . Its variance is and its autocorrelation at lag is .
Non-example: for and , the equation defines a random walk, and it has no weakly stationary solution. Indeed has variance , which is unbounded in , while for a stationary solution it is at most . Here has the root on the unit circle.
