Definition
Let be real numbers, called knots. The B-splines of degree for these knots are the functions defined by recursion on :
- for , if and otherwise;
- for and , where a term whose denominator is is taken to be .
Remarks
is a spline of degree with knots ; if , it is positive on and zero outside . On the B-splines of degree sum to , so they form a partition of unity there. At a knot of multiplicity , the B-splines of degree have continuous derivatives. An equivalent definition writes as times a divided difference of the truncated power at .
Example: knots and . Then , which is on , on and elsewhere: the hat function.
Non-example: let be on , on and elsewhere. It is piecewise linear on the same knots, but it is not . It differs from the hat function on , and it jumps at .
