Definition

A model is a triple (U,F,f)(U, F, f) where EE and FF are complex Banach spaces, U⊆EU \subseteq E is open and f ⁣:U→Ff \colon U \to F is a holomorphic map. Its underlying space is Z=f−1(0)Z = f^{-1}(0) with the topology induced from UU. For each complex Banach space GG, the model defines a sheaf ℋZ(G)\mathcal{H}_Z(G) on ZZ. Its stalk at z∈Zz \in Z is a quotient of the space of germs at zz of holomorphic maps g ⁣:U→Gg \colon U \to G. Let L(F,G)L(F, G) be the Banach space of continuous linear maps F→GF \to G. One divides by the germs x↦φ(x)(f(x))x \mapsto \varphi(x)\bigl(f(x)\bigr), where φ\varphi is a germ at zz of a holomorphic map U→L(F,G)U \to L(F, G). These sheaves are the holomorphic maps from ZZ to GG.

A Banach analytic space is a Hausdorff space XX with the following data and property. For each complex Banach space GG there is a sheaf ℋX(G)\mathcal{H}_X(G) of complex vector spaces on XX, depending functorially on GG. Its sections play the role of holomorphic maps to GG. Each point of XX has an open neighbourhood isomorphic to the underlying space of a model, compatibly with the sheaves ℋ(G)\mathcal{H}(G) for all GG.

Remarks

Example: if E=ℂnE = \C^n and F=ℂkF = \C^k, then a model is a local model of a complex analytic space, and the sheaf ℋZ(ℂ)\mathcal{H}_Z(\C) is its structure sheaf. In this case ℋZ(G)\mathcal{H}_Z(G) is determined by ℋZ(ℂ)\mathcal{H}_Z(\C), so complex analytic spaces are Banach analytic spaces. Also every open subset UU of a complex Banach space is a Banach analytic space, given by the model (U,{0},0)(U, \set{0}, 0).

Non-example: the triple (ℂ,ℂ,f)(\C, \C, f) with f(z)=zˉf(z) = \bar{z} is not a model, because ff is not holomorphic.

The definition uses all Banach spaces GG, not only G=ℂG = \C. When FF is infinite-dimensional, the map ff is not given by finitely many scalar equations, and scalar functions alone do not record the structure that ff defines. The notion is due to Douady.
