Barrier

Definition
Let , let be a bounded open set, and let be a point of its boundary . A barrier at is a function such that:
- is continuous on ;
- is superharmonic on ;
- and for every .
Remarks
Example: suppose there is a closed ball with , and let . Then is a barrier at . It is continuous on and harmonic on , since ; it vanishes at because ; and for the other points , which gives . For the function plays the same role. Non-example: satisfies clauses 1 and 3, but , so it is strictly subharmonic and fails clause 2. A local barrier is a function with these properties on for some neighbourhood of . A local barrier yields a barrier, so the two notions give the same regular points.
