Barycentric coordinates
Definition
Let be an affine space of dimension over a field . Let be affinely independent points of . For every point of there is a unique tuple such that where the right side is the affine combination . The numbers are the barycentric coordinates of with respect to .
Remarks
Example: in take , and . The point has barycentric coordinates . Check: the weights add up to , and . The centroid gets the coordinates .
Non-example: the points , , of are collinear, so they are not affinely independent. For them the coordinates are not unique, and the point has none at all.
When is , a point lies in the closed simplex with vertices exactly when all its barycentric coordinates are nonnegative. Homogeneous barycentric coordinates drop the condition : any tuple with nonzero sum is accepted, and two tuples that differ by a nonzero factor give the same point.
