Bernstein–Bézier form
Definition
Let be real numbers and let be an integer. For let These polynomials form a basis of the space of real polynomials of degree at most . Let be a polynomial of degree at most . Its Bernstein–Bézier form on is its expansion The uniquely determined numbers are its Bézier coefficients of degree on .
Remarks
On the basis consists of the Bernstein basis polynomials . Since the basis functions are nonnegative on and sum to , the values of on lie between and , and , . Example: on with , , so has Bézier coefficients . Non-example: has no Bernstein–Bézier form of degree , since it is not a polynomial of degree at most ; one must take . In several variables one uses barycentric coordinates of a simplex and the basis with .
