Definition

Let 1≤p<∞1 \le p < \infty. For a function g ⁣:ℝ→ℂg \colon \R \to \C whose pp-th power is locally integrable, put ∥g∥Bp=(lim sup⁡T→∞12T∫−TT∣g(x)∣p dx)1/p∈[0,∞].\norm{g}_{B^p} = \Big( \limsup_{T \to \infty} \frac{1}{2T} \int_{-T}^{T} \abs{g(x)}^p \, dx \Big)^{1/p} \in [0, \infty]. A generalized trigonometric polynomial is a function P(x)=∑k=1NckeiλkxP(x) = \sum_{k=1}^{N} c_k e^{i\lambda_k x} with N≥1N \ge 1, λk∈ℝ\lambda_k \in \R and ck∈ℂc_k \in \C. Let f ⁣:ℝ→ℂf \colon \R \to \C be a function with ∣f∣p\abs{f}^p locally integrable. It is Besicovitch almost periodic of order pp, or BpB^p almost periodic, if the following holds. For every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is a generalized trigonometric polynomial PP with ∥f−P∥Bp<ε\norm{f - P}_{B^p} < \varepsilon.

Remarks

The quantity ∥⋅∥Bp\norm{\cdot}_{B^p} is a seminorm, not a norm. It vanishes on every function in the Lebesgue space Lp(ℝ)L^p(\R), and the space of BpB^p classes is obtained by identifying functions f,gf, g with ∥f−g∥Bp=0\norm{f - g}_{B^p} = 0. Every Bohr almost periodic function is BpB^p almost periodic for every pp, since ∥g∥Bp≤sup⁡∣g∣\norm{g}_{B^p} \le \sup \abs{g}. For p=2p = 2, each B2B^2 almost periodic ff has a mean value of ∣f∣2\abs{f}^2 and Fourier coefficients a(λ)a(\lambda), nonzero for at most countably many λ\lambda, with lim⁡T→∞12T∫−TT∣f∣2=∑λ∣a(λ)∣2\lim_{T \to \infty} \frac{1}{2T} \int_{-T}^{T} \abs{f}^2 = \sum_\lambda \abs{a(\lambda)}^2.

Example: f=1[0,1]f = 1_{[0,1]} is BpB^p almost periodic for every pp. Indeed 12T∫−TT∣f∣p=12T\frac{1}{2T} \int_{-T}^{T} \abs{f}^p = \frac{1}{2T} for T≥1T \ge 1, so ∥f−0∥Bp=0\norm{f - 0}_{B^p} = 0 and the polynomial P=0P = 0 works. This ff is not continuous, so it is not Bohr almost periodic.

Non-example: f(x)=xf(x) = x is not BpB^p almost periodic. Every generalized trigonometric polynomial PP is bounded, say by CC, so ∣f−P∣≥∣x∣−C\abs{f - P} \ge \abs{x} - C and ∥f−P∥Bp=∞\norm{f - P}_{B^p} = \infty.
