Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1. Let ψ0\psi_0 be a function in the Schwartz space 𝒮(ℝn)\mathcal{S}(\R^n) with ψ0(ξ)=1\psi_0(\xi) = 1 for ∣ξ∣≤1\abs{\xi} \le 1 and ψ0(ξ)=0\psi_0(\xi) = 0 for ∣ξ∣≥2\abs{\xi} \ge 2. For j≥1j \ge 1 let ψj(ξ)=ψ0(2−jξ)−ψ0(2−j+1ξ)\psi_j(\xi) = \psi_0(2^{-j} \xi) - \psi_0(2^{-j+1} \xi), so that ∑j≥0ψj=1\sum_{j \ge 0} \psi_j = 1 and ψj\psi_j is supported in 2j−1≤∣ξ∣≤2j+12^{j-1} \le \abs{\xi} \le 2^{j+1}. For a tempered distribution ff, let Δjf=ℱ−1(ψj ℱf)\Delta_j f = \mathcal{F}^{-1}(\psi_j \, \mathcal{F} f), where ℱ\mathcal{F} is the Fourier transform; each Δjf\Delta_j f is a smooth function. Let s∈ℝs \in \R and 0<p,q≤∞0 < p, q \le \infty. The Besov space Bp,qs(ℝn)B^s_{p,q}(\R^n) is the set of tempered distributions ff with ∥f∥Bp,qs=(∑j=0∞2jsq∥Δjf∥Lp(ℝn)q)1/q<∞,\norm{f}_{B^s_{p,q}} = \Big( \sum_{j=0}^{\infty} 2^{jsq} \norm{\Delta_j f}_{L^p(\R^n)}^q \Big)^{1/q} < \infty, with the usual change to sup⁡j≥02js∥Δjf∥Lp\sup_{j \ge 0} 2^{js} \norm{\Delta_j f}_{L^p} when q=∞q = \infty.

Remarks

A different choice of ψ0\psi_0 gives the same space with an equivalent quasi-norm. For p,q≥1p, q \ge 1 the space is a Banach space; otherwise it is a complete quasi-normed space. Here Lp(ℝn)L^p(\R^n) is the Lp space, with the same formula when 0<p<10 < p < 1.

Example: B2,2s(ℝn)B^s_{2,2}(\R^n) is the space Hs(ℝn)H^s(\R^n) of tempered distributions with (1+∣ξ∣2)s/2f^∈L2(1 + \abs{\xi}^2)^{s/2} \hat f \in L^2. Indeed, by Plancherel, ∥Δjf∥L22=∫ψj2∣f^∣2 dξ\norm{\Delta_j f}_{L^2}^2 = \int \psi_j^2 \abs{\hat f}^2 \, d\xi up to a constant factor, and 22js2^{2js} is comparable with (1+∣ξ∣2)s(1 + \abs{\xi}^2)^s on the support of ψj\psi_j.

Non-example: the Dirac delta δ\delta on ℝn\R^n is not in B1,q0(ℝn)B^0_{1,q}(\R^n) for q<∞q < \infty. Here Δjδ=ℱ−1ψj\Delta_j \delta = \mathcal{F}^{-1} \psi_j, and for j≥1j \ge 1 this function is x↦2(j−1)n(ℱ−1ψ1)(2j−1x)x \mapsto 2^{(j-1)n} (\mathcal{F}^{-1} \psi_1)(2^{j-1} x). So ∥Δjδ∥L1\norm{\Delta_j \delta}_{L^1} is the same nonzero number for all j≥1j \ge 1, and the sum defining the norm diverges. The same computation shows that δ∈B1,∞0(ℝn)\delta \in B^0_{1,\infty}(\R^n).

For s>0s > 0 not an integer, B∞,∞s(ℝn)B^s_{\infty,\infty}(\R^n) is the Hölder space Ck,α(ℝn)C^{k,\alpha}(\R^n) with k=⌊s⌋k = \floor{s} and α=s−k\alpha = s - k.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
