Bessel function of the first kind
Definition
Let be a complex number and let be the gamma function, with read as when . For , with the principal branch of , the Bessel function of the first kind of order is If is an integer, the same formula defines as an entire function of .
Remarks
The power series in converges for all , since the ratio of consecutive terms is . The function solves Bessel's equation . Example: for . Check: with , the term equals , and summing gives . For a positive integer and , the terms with vanish, and one gets . So and are not independent, and a second solution is the Bessel function of the second kind. For integer , the generating function is for . Non-example: is not , although both equal at ; their series differ already in the term, for against for .
