Bessel function of the second kind

Builds on Bessel function of the first kind

Definition

Let JνJ_\nu denote the Bessel function of the first kind of order ν\nu, taken on ℂ∖(−∞,0]\C \setminus (-\infty, 0] with the principal branch of zνz^\nu. For ν∈ℂ∖ℤ\nu \in \C \setminus \Z, the Bessel function of the second kind of order ν\nu is Yν(z)=Jν(z)cos⁡(νπ)−J−ν(z)sin⁡(νπ).Y_\nu(z) = \frac{J_\nu(z) \cos(\nu \pi) - J_{-\nu}(z)}{\sin(\nu \pi)}. For an integer nn, it is the limit Yn(z)=lim⁡ν→nYν(z).Y_n(z) = \lim_{\nu \to n} Y_\nu(z).

Remarks

The function YνY_\nu solves Bessel's equation z2y′′+zy′+(z2−ν2)y=0z^2 y'' + z y' + (z^2 - \nu^2) y = 0, because it is a linear combination of solutions for non-integer ν\nu and a locally uniform limit of solutions for integer ν\nu. Its Wronskian with JνJ_\nu is W(Jν,Yν)(z)=2πzW(J_\nu, Y_\nu)(z) = \frac{2}{\pi z}, which never vanishes, so JνJ_\nu and YνY_\nu are independent for every ν\nu, integers included. This is the point of the definition: for an integer nn one has J−n=(−1)nJnJ_{-n} = (-1)^n J_n, so JnJ_n and J−nJ_{-n} do not form a basis, while JnJ_n and YnY_n do. For ν=12\nu = \frac{1}{2} the formula gives Y1/2(x)=−J−1/2(x)=−2πxcos⁡xY_{1/2}(x) = -J_{-1/2}(x) = -\sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi x}} \cos x for x>0x > 0. A non-example: the function J−νJ_{-\nu} alone is not YνY_\nu; it is a second solution only when ν∉ℤ\nu \notin \Z. The notation NνN_\nu is also used for YνY_\nu.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
